Studio portrait of 3019 Private (Pte) Robert Henry Cowl, 7th Battalion from South Melbourne, Victoria. A 22 year old compositor prior to enlisting on 6 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. While undergoing further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 59th and then the 60th Battalion and went with them to France in June 1916. Pte Cowl was killed in action on 19 July 1916 in the Battle of Fromelles and is commemorated on the VC Corner Memorial, Fromelles, France with others who have no known grave.
