Outdoor portrait of 1725 Private (Pte) Robert Charles Cornwall, 5th Battalion from Bairnsdale, Victoria. A 19 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 18 December 1914, he embarked for overseas service with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 14 April 1915. After disembarking in Egypt he served at Gallipoli where he was taken ill and evacuated to hospital at Mudros on the island of Lemnos. After being transferred to hospital in London, he recovered and returned to Egypt and then in May 1916 sailed for France where he re-joined the 5th Battalion at Fleurbaix. Pte Cornwall was wounded in action at Pozieres on 25 July and evacuated to the No 2 Australian General Hospital at Boulogne-Sur-Mer, France where he died from his wounds on 4 August 1916. He is buried in the Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
