Studio portrait of 3490 Private (Pte) John Robert Coulter, 17th Battalion from Mount Keira, NSW. A 19 year old miner prior to enlisting on 20 September 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 8th Reinforcements from Sydney on 20 December 1915 aboard HMAT Aeneas. He served with the battalion in France and then in Belgium where he was killed in action at Zillebeke on 23 September 1916. Pte Coulter is buried in the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground outside Ypres, Belgium.
