Studio portrait of 2211 Private (Pte) Edward Thomas Cox, 59th Battalion from Tomahawk Creek, Victoria. A 39 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 4 March 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements of the 7th Battalion from Melbourne on 17 June 1915 aboard HMAT Wandilla. While serving with the battalion at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action at Lone Pine. On recovering, he transferred to the 59th Battalion and went with them to France where he was killed in action at Fromelles on 19 July 1916. Pte Cox is commemorated on the VC Corner Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, France with others who have no known grave.
