Description

Portrait of 898 Private (Pte) Andrew Thomas Gordon Cumming, 7th Battalion from Bridgewater, Victoria. A 23 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 19 August 1914, he embarked for overseas service with H Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 19 October 1914. Following further training in Egypt, the 7th Battalion landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. After promotion to Lance Corporal on 30 April, Cumming was promoted to Company Sergeant Major (CSM) on 9 May 1915. CSM Cumming was wounded in action at Lone Pine on 12 August 1915 and later that day died from his wounds onboard Hospital Ship Devanha. He was buried at sea off Gallipoli and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave. His brother 5990 Pte William John Cumming, 38th Battalion was killed in action in the Third Battle of Ypres, Belgium on 4 October 1917. [See image H05863.]
