Description
Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Kenneth Curlewis, 14th Battalion from Malvern Victoria, shown wearing the uniform of a commissioned officer in the Victorian Militia. A 21 year old electrical engineer prior to enlisting on 6 October 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Sergeant with F Company from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Ulysses. While serving at Gallipoli, he was appointed Company Quarter Master Sergeant and later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Lt Curlewis was killed in action in the attack on Hill 971 on 8 August 1915 and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave.
