Studio portrait of Captain John Robert Davidson, 8th Battalion from Warrnambool, Victoria. He was a 19 year old carpenter when he enlisted on 19 August 1914 and he embarked for overseas as a Sergeant (service number 389) on 19 October 1914 from Melbourne aboard HMAT Benalla. While serving at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action on 14 May 1915 and evacuated but recovered and returned to see further action at Gallipoli. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 20 February 1916, to Lieutenant on 27 July 1916 and to Captain on 20 September 1917. He remained with the 8th Battalion and while serving in Belgium was killed in action on 4 October 1917. Although buried approximately 800 yards south of Zonnebeke, Belgium, his grave could not be located after the war and his name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium for those allied soldiers who have no known grave.
