Studio portrait of 659 Private (Pte) Robert James Dickie, 8th Battalion. A farmer of Watchem, Victoria, prior to enlistment on 19 August 1914 he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Benalla on 19 October 1914 for Egypt. He was slightly wounded for the first time in May 1915 but was able to join his unit in the Dardanelles on 22 June 1915. He was wounded in action for the second time on 11 August 1915 and was evacuated to Saint David's Hospital, Malta, before rejoining his unit on 23 November 1915 and then withdrawing to Alexandria. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France in March 1916. Pte Dickie was killed in action near Pozieres, France, on 25 July 1916. He was aged 29 years. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
