Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Thomas Whiteway Eales, 21st Battalion. A law clerk from Lilydale, Vic prior to enlistment, Lt Eales embarked with the rank of Corporal with D Company from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses on 10 May 1915. On 21 August 1917 he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for daring and valuable reconnaissance work. Later, with the rank of Lieutenant, he was killed in action on 19 May 1918 and was buried in the Mericourt LAbbe Communal Cemetery Extension.
