Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Howard Thomas Elder, 5th Battalion. A salesman from East Prahran, Vic prior to enlistment, Lt Elder embarked with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant (2nd Lt) from Melbourne on HMAT Orvieto on 21 October 1914. On 9 May 1915, as the Battalion's Signals Officer, he died of wounds received in action at Gallipoli and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
