Studio portrait of 130 Trooper (Tpr) Herbert John Ellis, 3rd Light Horse Regiment. A labourer from Rosewater, SA prior to enlistment, Tpr Ellis embarked from Adelaide on 22 October 1914 on HMAT Port Lincoln. On 7 August 1915 he died of illness and was buried in the Alexandria (Chatby) Military War Memorial and Cemetery, Egypt. Two brothers, 500 Tpr Fred Bertram Ellis and 589 Private (Pte) Harold Percy Ellis were killed in action.
