Description
Studio portrait of 3751 Private (Pte) John Alexander Finlay, 14th Battalion. A native of Glasgow, Scotland and a coppersmith from South Melbourne, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Finlay embarked with the 12th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion from Adelaide on HMAT Ceramic on 23 November 1915. After transferring to the 14th Battalion, he was reported as missing in action. A later court of enquiry found that he had been killed in action near Pozieres on 8 August 1916. In 1929 the bodies of two unknown Australian soldiers were exhumed, one of which was later identified as that of Pte Finlay. He was re-interred with full military honours in the Serre Road Cemetery No. 2, France.
