Studio portrait of 2033 Private Norman John Alex Hall, 12th Battalion from Hobart Tasmania. A 21 year old storeman prior to enlisting on 11 February 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 5th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 17 April 1915. After serving with the 12th Battalion at Gallipoli, he transferred to the 52nd Battalion in Egypt and was promoted to Lance Corporal (L Cpl) in March 1916. In June he went with the 52nd Battalion to France and was killed in action at Mouquet Farm, Pozieres on 14 August 1916. L Cpl Hall is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. His brother, 1218 Sergeant Eric Hall was also killed in action [see image H06000].
