Studio portrait of 623 Private Matthew Michael Fitzpatrick, 28th Battalion from Fremantle, Western Australia. A 25 year old ship’s fireman prior to enlisting on 10 March 1915, he embarked for overseas with A Company from Fremantle aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 9 June 1915. After serving at Gallipoli, he returned to Egypt where he was transferred to the 7th Machine Gun Company and went with them to France in March 1916. He was promoted to Corporal on 20 August and then to Sergeant (Sgt) on 20 November 1916. After being taken ill in February 1917 in France, he was sent to England for medical treatment and on his return to France seven months later, he joined the 22nd Machine Gun Company. Sgt Fitzpatrick was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for conspicuous gallantry during operations at Zonnebeke, Belgium between 4 and 7 October 1917. After being wounded in action on 7 October, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment and returned to Australia, arriving on 11 September 1918.
