Description

Portrait of 3991 Corporal (Cpl) Thomas Halloran MM, 2nd Battalion from Katoomba, NSW. A 44 year old gardener prior to enlisting on 23 August 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private (Pte) with the 12th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Medic (A7) on 7 January 1916. Shortly after arriving in Egypt, he proceeded to France in March to join the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front. Pte Halloran was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for conspicuous gallantry during action against the Hindenberg Line at Fleurbaix, France on 4 July 1916 when he greatly distinguished himself by skilful bombing. On one occasion he advanced against the enemy alone and bombed them out of a position. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 12 May and to Corporal on 10 August 1917. After being taken ill on 13 December 1917, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment and then returned to Australia where he was discharged medically unfit on 25 May 1918.
