Studio portrait of 710 Private (Pte) Norman Reid Fleming, 14th Battalion. A tramway employee from East St Kilda, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Fleming embarked with F Company from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses on 22 November 1914. After being wounded in action at Gallipoli, he returned to Australia on HMAT Euripides on 29 August 1915. After recovering from his wounds he re-enlisted and embarked with the service number 4397 with the 11th Reinforcements 23rd Battalion from Melbourne on RMS Malwa on 23 April 1916. On 3 May 1917 he was killed in action at Bullecourt, France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. His older brother 5599 Andrew Cumming Fleming, 21st Battalion was also killed in action.
