Studio portrait of 5700 Private (Pte) John Bungay Francis, 48th Battalion. A beekeeper from Port Lincoln, SA prior to enlistment, Pte Francis, along with his brother 5701 Pte Robert Arthur Francis, embarked with the 18th Reinforcements, 10th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Barambah on 27 June 1916. After transferring to the 48th Battalion, he was killed in action in Belgium, aged 22, and is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Pte Robert Francis was later killed in action in France.
