Studio portrait of 757 Private (Pte) Hubert Emile Funston, 54th Battalion. A commercial traveller from Malvern, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Funston was rejected from enlistment on three separate occasions due to poor eyesight. After finally being accepted, he embarked from Sydney with C Company 36th Battalion on HMAT Beltana on 13 May 1916. Later transferring to the 54th Battalion, he was killed in action on 18 March 1917, aged 20, having previously being twice wounded. He was buried in the Bancourt British Cemetery. His younger brother 1701 Pte Edward Mercer Funston, served with the 2nd Pioneer Battalion and was invalided back to Australia on 18 March 1917.
