Studio portrait of 2331 Private (Pte) John Gardiner, 22nd Battalion from Woolsthorpe, Victoria. An 18 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 5 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 5th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard RMS Osterley on 29 September 1915. While serving on the Western Front, he was killed in action at Pozieres, France sometime between 27 July and 4 August 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
