Portrait of 911 (later 2272) Private (Pte) Alfred John Gardiner, 9th Battalion (later 7th Battalion) from Footscray, Victoria. A 23 year old labourer with three years’ service in the Victorian Militia and living in Mackay, Queensland when he enlisted on 21 August 1914, he embarked for overseas service with H Company, 9th Battalion from Brisbane, Queensland aboard HMAT Omrah (A5) on 24 September 1914. After disembarking in Egypt and undergoing further training, he landed at Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion which was the first battalion ashore on 25 April. He later transferred to the 7th Battalion on 7 August and he was then reported missing in action at Lone Pine on either the 8th or 9th August 1915. Pte Gardiner is buried in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brother 593 Sergeant Richard Job Gardiner also served in the 7th Battalion and returned to Australia. [See image H01521.]
