Description

Studio portrait of 1936 Private (Pte) Walter Harold George, 21st Battalion from St Kilda, Victoria. An 18 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 21 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 3rd Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) on 26 August 1915. After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve on the Western Front where he was killed in action on 18 November 1916 and buried in the AIF Burial Ground at Flers, France. His brothers 5603 Pte Frank Wilfred George, 22nd Battalion and 5604 Pte Arthur Ebenezer George, 21st Battalion also served on the Western Front and returned to Australia
