Studio portrait of 3844 Private (Pte) David Bernard Harford, 51st Battalion from Ravensthorpe, Western Australia. A 28 year old miner prior to enlisting on 14 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 9th Reinforcements of the 28th Battalion from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard HMAT Miltiades (A28) on 12 February 1916. Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France where he joined the 51st Battalion on 24 September 1916. Pte Harford was wounded in action at Pozieres, France on 31 March 1917 and died of wounds on that same day. He is buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Pozieres, France. [His mother stated that “he was born in a spring cart at Albany after us doing a journey of 14 hundred miles.”]
