Description

Studio portrait of Private J Gooden, believed to be 3833 Private (Pte) James Mathew Gosden, 22nd Battalion from Carlton, Victoria. A 23 year old butcher prior to enlisting on 14 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Warilda (A69) on 8 February 1916. Pte Gosden was wounded in action in France on 26 August 1916 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. He did not return to his unit in France until 18 June 1917. Pte Gosden was killed in action at Marett Wood on 19 May 1918 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
