Studio portrait of 6516 Private (Pte) Robert William Gratwick, 10th Battalion from Glencoe, South Australia. A 27 year old farmer with prior service in the Mount Gambier Scottish South Australian Infantry Regiment prior to enlisting in the AIF on 7 September 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 21st Reinforcements from Adelaide on 23 October 1916 aboard HMAT Port Melbourne (A16). Following a brief period of hospitalisation in England, he joined the 10th Battalion in France where he was killed in action at Bullecourt on 7 May 1917. Pte Gratwick is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
