Description
Portrait of 1346 (later 1232) Private (Pte) William John Gray, 5th Battalion from Clifton Hill, Victoria. A 26 year old jockey prior to enlisting on 2 November 1914, he embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Clan MacGillivray (A46) on 2 February 1915. After further training in Egypt, he embarked from Alexandria on 5 April to join the Gallipoli Campaign. However, he was admitted to hospital on Lemnos Island on 20 April with rheumatic fever, transferred to a hospital ship five days later and then sent to a hospital in Heliopolis, Cairo where he died of tubercular meningitis on 30 April 1915. Pte Gray is buried in the Cairo War Cemetery, Cairo, Egypt.
