Description
Portrait of 1347 Private (Pte) Francis Edward ‘Frank’ Greene, 7th Battalion from Collingwood, Victoria. A 34 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 31 October 1914, he embarked for overseas service with the 2nd Reinforcements from Melbourne, Victoria aboard HMAT McGillvray (A46) on 2 February 1915. Following further training in Egypt, he served at Gallipoli and was wounded in action at Cape Helles on 8 May. Pte Greene was evacuated back to Egypt and later died of his wounds in the Deaconesses’ Hospital at Alexandria on 16 May 1915. He is buried in the Chatby Military and War Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt.
