Description
Studio portrait of 330 Private (Pte) Monaughan Raymond Hayes, 1st Light Horse Regiment (LHR) from Cooma, NSW. A 19 year old painter serving with the 11th Light Horse Militia when he enlisted on 23 August 1914, he embarked for overseas service with B Squadron from Sydney aboard HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 20 October 1914. After further training in Egypt, he arrived at Gallipoli on 9 May 1915. Two weeks later, he was wounded in action and after one month of medical treatment and recovery, he re-joined the 1st LHR. On 31 July 1915, Pte Hayes was killed in action and is buried in the Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
