Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) George Heaton, 7th Battalion from Wangaratta, Victoria. A 38 year old managing law clerk who had previously serviced in the Boer War and was a Lieutenant in the Victorian Militia Battalion, he was appointed a Lieutenant in the AIF on 1 April 1916. He embarked for overseas with the 17th Reinforcements of the 7th Battalion from Melbourne on 4 April 1916 aboard HMAT Euripides. Lt Heaton joined his battalion in Belgium where he was killed in action at Passchendaele on 4 October 1917. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
