Description
Portrait of 1193 Trooper William Bloomfield Helms, 8th Light Horse Regiment (LHR) from Avenel, Victoria. A 21 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 12 June 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 27 September 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he joined the 8th LHR and served with them in the Middle East. He was wounded in action on 9 August and died from shrapnel wounds to the chest at No 26 Casualty Clearing Station on 12 August 1916. Trooper Helms is buried in the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Suez Canal, Egypt.
