Studio portrait of 5854 Private (Pte) Herbert Hugh Hickey, 21st Battalion from North Carlton, Victoria. A 31 year old grazier prior to enlisting on 15 August 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 16th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 2 October 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France in February 1917 and served on the Western Front. Pte Hickey was killed in action during the battalion's assault on Ville sur Ancre on 19 May 1918 and is buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Dernancourt, France.
