Studio portrait of 108 Private (later Sergeant) William Hills, 7th Battalion from Carlton, Victoria, A 32 year old painter with previous service in the Militia Reserves in Durban, South Africa in 1906 prior to enlisting in the AIF on 17 August 1914, he embarked for overseas with B Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 19 October 1914. While serving at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Corporal on 30 April and to Sergeant on 14 May and was then killed in action on 19 May 1915. Sgt Hills is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave.
