Studio portrait of 472 Private (Pte) Leslie Elizah Hinchliffe, 46th Battalion from Daylesford, Victoria. A 23 year old motor driver prior to enlisting on 14 February 1916, he embarked for overseas service with D Company, 39th Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 27 May 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France in September and transferred to the 46th Battalion. Pte Hinchcliffe was killed in action near Flers, France on 15 November 1916 and was buried near where he fell. After the war his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. His brother, 1881 Pte Lionel Arthur Hinchcliffe, 3rd Pioneer Battalion returned to Australia.
