Studio portrait of 1369 (later 1726A) Private John James (alias John Joseph) Hodson, 3rd, (later 22nd) and (later 21st) Battalion, of Chatswood, NSW. Son of William Benjamin and Phoebe Ann Hodson of North Sydney, NSW. A driver prior to enlisting, he initially embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Seang Bee (A48) on 11 February 1915. He returned to Australia aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 25 May 1915. Later he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 16 July 1915. He was killed in action on 4 August 1916 in France, aged 22. He has no known grave and is remembered with honour on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France.
