Studio portrait of 2262 Signaller (Private) George Thomas Holmes, 57th Battalion from Wedderburn, Victoria. A 21 year old storeman prior to enlisting on 31 January 1916, he attended Signals School and then embarked for overseas service with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Orsova (A67) on 1 August 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France to join the 57th Battalion in December. He was killed in action at Beaumetz, France on 26 March 1917 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
