Portrait of 543 Gunner William Henry Holmes, 36th Heavy Artillery Group from Williamstown, Victoria. A 22 year old rubber worker prior to enlisting on 7 September 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 3rd Reinforcements of the Siege Artillery Brigade from Sydney, NSW aboard HMAT Orsova (A67) on 10 November 1915. After disembarking in the United Kingdom, he underwent further training before proceeding to France in September 1916. He spent from November 1916 to March 1917 with the 54th Battery before returning to the 36th Heavy Artillery Group. Gunner Holmes was killed in action on 23 April 1917 and buried in the nearby St Nicolas British Cemetery, Arras, France.
