Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant Thomas Alfred Hooper, 5th Battalion, a 24 year old draper from Auburn, Victoria when he was appointed an officer in the AIF on 3 August 1915. He embarked for overseas with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 29 September 1915 aboard RMS Osterley. While serving in France, he was promoted to Lieutenant (Lt) on 23 May 1916 and was then killed in action at Pozieres on 18 August 1916. Lt Hooper's name is inscribed on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France with others who have no known grave.
