Studio portrait of 1728 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Frank William Banner Hopkins, 60th Battalion from Port Melbourne, Victoria. A 19 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 19 May 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 23rd Battalion from Melbourne on 16 July 1915 aboard HMAT Demosthenes. While serving at Gallipoli, he was taken ill and evacuated for medical treatment. On recovering, he went to France where he joined the 60th Battalion and served with them in France and Belgium where he was killed in action at Passchendaele on 26 September 1917. L Cpl Hopkins is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
