Studio portrait of 2631 Private Albert Howden, 6th Battalion from Thornbury, Victoria. A 20 year old iron-moulder prior to enlistment on 14 April 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 8th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 26 August 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises. After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve on the Western Front where he was killed in action near Passchendaele, Belgium on 4 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
