Studio portrait of 4497 Private Harold Gilmore Hughes, 10th Battalion. A 22 year old clerk from Eastwood, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 14th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades for Suez. Following further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and proceeded with them to France in June 1916. He was wounded in action at Mouquet Farm on 16 August 1916 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. After rejoining the 50th Battalion in France on 7 February 1917, he was killed in action at Noreuil on 2 April 1917 and buried in the Noreuil Military Cemetery, France. His grave and 81 others were destroyed by shellfire and his name is recorded on a special memorial in the Noreuil Australian Cemetery. He was aged 23 years.
