Studio portrait of 2369 Private (Pte) Sydney Edwin Harold Humphreys, 60th Battalion from St Peters, Sydney, NSW. A 23 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 18 August 1914 in the 1st Battalion with service number 841, he embarked for overseas service from Sydney, NSW aboard HMAT Afric (A19) on 18 October 1914. Following further training in Egypt, he was returned to Australia arriving on 15 April 1915 and was immediately transferred to the 8th Battalion and given the service number 2369. He then re-embarked for overseas with the 7th Reinforcements of the 8th Battalion from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 16 July 1915. After serving at Gallipoli, he transferred to the 60th Battalion in Egypt in May 1916 and went with them to England and then onto France in September 1916. Pte Humphreys was killed in action on 20 November 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
