Studio portrait of 3362 Private (Pte) George Edward Jeffs, 6th Battalion from South Gippsland, Victoria. A 22 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 10 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 11th Reinforcements of the 8th Battalion from Adelaide on 11 October 1915 aboard HMAT Nestor. On arrival in Egypt, he transferred to the 6th Battalion and proceeded to France where he was wounded in action. After being evacuated to England for medical treatment, he recovered and returned to the 6th Battalion in France only to be killed in action near Gueudecourt on 12 December 1916. Pte Jeffs is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
