Studio portrait of 3312 Private (Pte) Wallace Robertson Johnstone, 5th Battalion. A hardware salesman from Northcote, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Johnstone embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Nestor on 11 October 1915. Later transferring to the 2nd Light Trench Mortar Battery with the rank of Gunner, he was wounded in action and, on 6 March 1917, he died as a result of his wounds, aged 20, and was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
