Studio portrait of 2920 Private (Pte) Leonard Jordan, 53rd Battalion from Marrickville, NSW. A 20 year old green grocer prior to enlisting on 8 June 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 7th Reinforcements from Sydney on 25 October 1916 aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11). Following further training in England, he proceeded to France and joined the 17th Battalion in March 1917. Pte Jordan was killed in action on the Menin Road, Belgium on 20 September 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave. His older brother, 79 Cpl Edwin Jordan, 4th Battalion was killed in action in France on 15 April 1917. [See image H06460.]
