Studio portrait of 6146 Private (Pte) Clarence Sasefield Joyce, 25th Battalion from Gayndah, Queensland. A 23 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 15 August 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 17th Reinforcements from Brisbane, Queensland aboard HMAT Marathon (A75) on 27 October 1916. Following further training in England, he proceeded to France in April and was killed in action near Bullecourt on 6 May 1917. Pte Joyce is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. His brother, 2678 Pte Horace Toovey Joyce, 52nd Battalion was killed in action in Belgium on 9 June 1917.
