Studio portrait of 2678 Private (Pte) Horace Toovey Joyce, 52nd Battalion from Gayndah, Queensland. A 20 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 5 June 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 7 October 1916. Following further training in England, he proceeded to France in January 1917. Pte Joyce was killed in action at Messines, Belgium on 9 June 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial with others who have no known grave.
