Description
Studio portrait of 1740 Private Gordon Joyce, 28th Battalion from East Fremantle, Western Australia. A 21 year old grocer prior to enlisting in the AIF on 2 March 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements from Fremantle on 23 July 1915 aboard HMAT Demosthenes. After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve on the Western Front where he was killed in action sometime between 3 and 6 November 1916. His body was found in a trench near Fleurs, France on 6 November 1916 and he was immediately buried but after the war his grave could not be located. His name is inscribed on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial with others who have no known grave.
