Studio portrait of 249 Private Joseph Kavanagh, 17th Battalion from Sandringham, Victoria. A 30 year old station hand prior to enlistment on 13 February 1915, he embarked for overseas with A Company from Sydney on 12 May 1915 aboard HMAT Themistocles. He was killed in action at Hill 60 on 27 August 1915 and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
