Studio portrait of 1232 Private (Pte) Thomas Kelly, 17th Battalion from Pyrmont, NSW. A 41 year old fireman prior to enlisting on 15 May 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements of the Light Trench Mortar Battery from Sydney on 17 October 1916 aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40). On arrival in France, he transferred to the 17th Battalion and was killed in action near Lagnicourt on 16 April 1917. Pte Kelly is buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France.
