Studio portrait of 1021 Private (Pte) Thomas Kelly, 10th Battalion from Renmark, South Australia. A 21 year old licensed jockey prior to enlisting on 18 September 1914, he embarked for overseas with A Company from Adelaide aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 20 October 1914. While serving at Gallipoli, he was wounded in action on 27 September 1915 and evacuated to Gibraltar and then London for medical treatment. He returned to this battalion in Egypt in March and later that month proceeded to France. Pte Kelly was killed in action at Pozieres on 25 July 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
