Description
Studio portrait of 588 Corporal (later Sergeant) Robert Haldane Kilpatrick, 18th Battalion from Hamilton, Newcastle, NSW. A 24 year old school teacher prior to enlisting on 24 February 1915, he embarked for overseas service as a Private with the Machine Gun Section of the 18th Battalion from Sydney, NSW aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 25 June 1915. While serving at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Corporal on 25 August 1915 and then after returning to Egypt, he was promoted to Sergeant (Sgt) on 23 March 1916. Shortly thereafter, he went with his battalion to France where he died of wounds received in action at Pozieres on 31 July 1916. Sgt Kilpatrick is buried in the Puchevillers British Cemetery, France.
